Full TRANSPUNA: Catamarca-Salta-Jujuy (only between April to December)

8 days 7 nights: from Fiambalá to La Quiaca

Day 1: Colonial villages

Departure from the city of Salta, towards the Calchaquí valleys, up Seclantás and Molinos visiting the historical buildings of these colonial times and finally we will reach our final destination of the day which is the city of Cafayate.

Day 2: Archeology

After breakfast, we will leave Cafayate through the town of Quilmes in the province of Tucumán, where we can enter to visit the archaeological complex of the Quilmes Indians, and from there we will continue entering the province of Catamarca, passing through the city of Santa María And Belén can then visit a small town called London where archaeological ruins are also found but this time of the Inca culture where we can visit the Site Museum. After there we will continue ... always on a paved route until the intersection of the RN40 with the RN60 will take us to the town of Fiambalá where we will stay in a hotel.

Day 3: 4x4 adventure

We will leave Fiambalá with the aim of changing the region since the rise to the Puna of Atacama will begin, for this our course will always be north when suddenly the road simply does not exist more since it is traveling practically all the time on the river Las Papas that for approximately 2 hours will cross it countless times until we reach the place of the same name Las Papas ... that will wait for us with food as a picnic under the shadow of huge willows. After lunch begins the abrupt level change since we will travel a mining footprint to the white volcano boiler, estimated to exceed an important slope until reaching 4000 meters. On sea level, from there we will continue between volcanic dunes until we reach the losing pumice field, which makes up the remains of the explosive volcanic eruption of the white volcano only 5,000 years ago. After the volcanic field, we will continue to connect the normal route that will take us to the town of El Peñón where we will stay in lodging.

Day 4: To the gallant volcano

Breakfast, load picnic and start the crossing to the crater of the Galán volcano. For a generally well-maintained footprint, we will arrive after a couple of hours at an incredible lagoon that between spring and autumn is populated with Andean flamingos, guayatas, and ducks ... and from there we will go up to the edge of the boiler to 4750 meters. On the nive of the sea descend to the valley of the boiler and admire another great lagoon called diamond with some small hot springs geysers. We will return to El Peñón for the same footprint, stopping in a formation of volcanic rocks of this eruption of the gallant 2.5 million years ago, and from El Peñón, in asphalt again, we will arrive at the town ahead of the Puna Catamarqueña: - Antofagasta de la Sierra

Day 5: Salar Day

We are leaving from Antofagasta de la Sierra, another high mountain step: El Abra de Calacas at 4650 meters. Seeing a large number of vicuñas on the road since it is a vega (slope or survey) of fresh water (which in winter freezes), with vegetation. Then another imposing scenario: the viewpoint from which we will see all the Salar of Antofalla and its subsequent descent to the salt level, visiting the Pozo Bravo lagoon with the finding of microorganisms called stromatolites, capable of generating oxygen in extreme conditions by photosynthesis. We will reach a small town also called Antofalla, of only 50 inhabitants where we will have lunch at local dining We will completely pass until we reach the town of Tolar Grande.

Day 6 Landscapes of another world

Leaving a large tolar, on the outskirts of the town we will visit the sea eyes (slopes of fresh water at the edge of the salt of Arizaro) and then, during the next 50 km, we will cross a reddish landscape of sedimentary rocks known as the Desert of the Devil, Red desert, 7 Curvas and Salar del Diablo that simulate extreme environments of fiction films of other worlds, we will pass through villages such as Pocitos and Olacacapato to take the RN40 again passing under the famous bridge La Porvorilla and then arriving to the limit Salta - Jujuy watching the impressive basalt cast of a volcano called Tuzgy and finally, after the first Jujeños villages (Sey and Huancar) we will reach the town of Susques.

Day 7 The green puna

The incredible contrast between the Puna of Atacama in the provinces of Catamarca and Salta with respect to that of Jujuy is precisely the vegetation: there is more population (although very dispersed too) and much greener. Leaving Susques, we will see from the top the Salar de Olaroz and then a town called Coranzulí with a square place and church also of the colonial era. I follow the RN40 to the north and pass sectors with a lot of mining operation activity, we will reach a small town called Cusi Cusi, with a watch place to admire the Valley of the Moon is incredible. From there, the land route leads us to cross the Oros River and to get inside a ravine that for 11 km is the river itself the route itself, is called the Paicone creek. From there we will arrive at the town of Santa Catalina at the end of the day.

Day 8 The extreme north of Argentina

From Santa Catalina, we will arrive at the border city of La Quiaca which only separates a bridge from the Bolivian city of Villazón- already from La Quiaca. With asphalt road, we will return to Salta touring the entire creek of Huamahuaca and its towns of Humahuaca, Tilcara, and Purmamarca, to continue descending to the valley where the capital of the province is: SS de Jujuy and from there, on a road dominated by subtropical jungle we will enter the province of Salta again, estimating to reach the city at the last minute.

It is a unique journey in its kind that allows one to know all the Puna of Atacama.
