National Park El Rey it’s located at 200 kms to the East of Salta city, and the last 45 kms. before get there, the road it’s very muddy during the rainy season in Salta province, between December to March. In normal conditions, the driving time it’s around 3 hours each way.
Starting in the early morning in Salta city, we will arrive to the National Park around 10:00 PM. Right on the entrance, a park ranger will welcome us and give some brochures, then we will keep driving to the central part where is the administration and the ranger’s head quarter.
Once we get there, we have two sectors to go in a 4x4 and visit. One is Popayan River, driving 40 minutes more over the forest, we will get into an abandon camping area where we can leave our truck and walk a little around to see the wonderful landscape of the river over the forest with a lash vegetation. If is not the rainy season, we can see lot of fishes over the clear water of the river in many natural pools. Fishes are dorados (gold fish), cat fish, sabalos and bogas. Fishing is forbidden in this National Park.
To go another sector of the park, we must return to the central part and then continue to the parking area of the way to Pozo Verde. If it´s time for lunch, we can do it (including in the price) near the river bed. Then we can walk a little bit over this area to see a different kind of forest like in Popayán, in this case the trees are higher because it’s call transition forest with different species and environment. The4 trees are: cedros, tipas and laurels specilly, and in a dark part of the base forest we can see a lot of ferns.
Not every trips we can see lot of fauna in the park, that´s depend the weather, season and time.. It’s nice when we can see large groups of wild pigs (pecarí), Tapir (antas), Lobito de río, and more…
The only thing that I can promised you are TICKS… those tiny insects it’s drop into your clothes looking for your skin, but don’t worry are not dangerous, are only uncomfortable.
So…4:30 PM it’s time to return to Salta because we have 3 hours driving back.
