EXPEDITION PUNA – ATACAMA DESERT THROUGH THE ANDES

................with one day of trekking

We will cross The Andes Mountain Chain by Paso de Jama to get San Pedro de Atacama anmd we will return over Paso de Sico (in Salta Province).

The landscape is beautiful. We see salty desert and lakes full of pink flamingos at 4.000 m above sea level, all dominated by snow capped volcanos such as the famous Lincancabur of 6.000 m and the still active Lascar of 5.200 m.

In San Pedrode Atacama (Chile) a few interesting excursions are available during our two days stay in town: The Tatio Gaisers, El Valle de la Luna ( The Moon Valley), el Salar de Atacama (Salty Desert of Atacama).

Day 1

Departure from Salta to  Jama Pass to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. Night in San Pedro de Atacama Time estimate to travel 10/12 hours..

Day 2

Local excursions in Atacama. Ruins of Tulor, local archeological museum and Moon Valley at sunset time. Nigth in San Pedro de Atacama.

Day 3

Géisers del Tatio: It´s an excursion in minibus to the thermal fields of the Tatio Volcano at 4.000 mts. a.s.l. and 190 kms. from San Pedro where we will see at the sunrise time the boild water blow out from the earth in a fantastic natural show. Them we will back to San Pedro but , on the way we will stop on Termas de Puritama (thermal water) to relax (optional).Nigth in San Pedro de Atacama.

Day 4

Early in the morning, we start in vehicule a short trip of 40 kms. away from San Pedro to get a small village named "Machuca" where we will start our trek of 6/7 hours down hill over a nice desert landscape along small canyons and finally a truck will pick us up to return San Pedro de Atacama stoping on the way in a nice place named "Yerbas Buenas" where we can see petroglifs (draws carved on the rocks) of the old nomads cultures from the desert. We will return to San Pedro de Atacama at night.

Day 5

Departure from San Pedro de Atacama - visit Chaxa laggon on Atacama Salt Flat - Toconao - Socaire - Sico Pass - Argentina Border (custom and migartion chek) - San Antonio de Los Cobres - Salta. Night in Salta city.

Estimate time to travell 10/12 hours..
